Gustav Klimt's "Jurisprudence," completed in 1903, was the final painting in his controversial University of Vienna ceiling series. The artwork depicts a naked, elderly man cowering before three female figures representing truth, justice, and law, while an enormous octopus symbolizing the power of fate ensnares him with its tentacles. Tragically, "Jurisprudence" was destroyed by retreating Nazi forces in May 1945 during a fire at Schloss Immendorf castle in Austria, where they had been stored for safekeeping, leaving behind only photographic records and preliminary sketches of this masterpiece.
